Manila, Authentic Thai Food Has Finally Arrived
Fried Soft Shell Crab in Garlic – Phu Nim Tord Kra Tiem
If there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s food that packs a punch and brings on the heat! That’s why my recent visit to Nara Thai what I was craving for. Nara Thai originated in Bangkok and, as such, serves flavors that bring me back to nostalgic memories of cheers-ing with Singha beers and eating sticky mango rice on the streets of Bangkok.
Here are some must-try dishes that I simply can’t resist
Tom Ka Gai
Who doesn’t love a warm heaty coconut milk broth that ignites an explosion of Thai flavors in your mouth with every spoonful. The chicken adds a nice substantial component to the soup that, with white rice on the side, could be a complete meal. But I’m not stopping there! Next course…
Yum Sum O (Pomelo Salad)
Refreshing is the word when it comes to this cool, Thai salad with delicious fresh pomelo and prawns. The crunch of the smokey cashew nuts adds to the texture of the dish and leaves me singing sah wah dee khrap! with glee. More of this dish, please.
Goong Kaneuang (Prawn Pancake)
I’m not embellishing when I say that every person at my table ate an entire plate of this dish by themselves. If you have an affinity for savory pancakes, this one does not disappoint. Douse this Thai flapjack in plum sauce and close your eyes to savor the moment, uninterrupted.
Pad Thai Kai Krob
Nothing reminds me of street food more than stir-fried noodles sprinkled with fish sauce, laced with with sprouts, green onion, cashew nuts, chili powder, tofu, egg, and topped with plump juicy prawns…sorry I just slobbered on my keyboard. Next…
Beef Massaman Curry
This mild Thai dish stands out among the rest because of its fusion origins— supposedly coming from Persia, “Massaman” is derived from an old-school word meaning “Muslim.” This Beef Massaman Curry has tender, quality chunks of beef swimming in a pool of curry gravy, paired with cubed potatoes and, with traditional spices like cardamom and cinnamon, these flavors will leave a lingering impression on your pallet. I can’t resist pouring about half a cup of rice in the last few bites as to not leave behind a single serving of the curry.
